PREPARATIONS —BEFORE FOR THE INSTITUTE
  1. PLEASE Check TA training requirements for your department. First, please be sure that you know your department's TA training program plan and what will be expected of you as a Lead TA. You may need to talk to last year's Lead TA, the department's faculty coordinator of TA training, or obtain a copy of the department's TA Department (TAD) Training Grant proposal for this year from your Department's Administrative Assistant. The proposal describes the department's training plan.
  2. TAT assessment. Please be prepared to discuss how your department measures the effectiveness of its TA training program. If possible, bring copies of any questionnaires or written procedures used in the past. If there are no assessment activities currently in place, please bring ideas on ways assessment can be built into the current program.
  3. Read sample summaries of departmental TA training programs. Read the brief lists describing the TA training program for each department in the Short Menu for Departmental TA Training. Please check the accuracy of the information given for your department. If your department has an online page of responsibilities, an online departmental TA handbook, or a TA training web site please check to see that it is listed on the Sample Summaries page. If not, please email the url to <shirley@id.ucsb.edu>.
  4. Check the strengths and weaknesses of your departmental TA training web page. Also note whether or not it links to the campus wide TA training web site www.oic.id.ucsb.edu/ta/index.html and to the Certificate in College and University Teaching www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/ccut/. If these links are not present, please check w/your department's chair and web liaison to discuss where they could be added.

Teaching assistants are mandated reporters of sexual harassment complaints. Therefore, all teaching assistants must train in sexual harassment prevention. Take the on-line training (http://apps.sa.ucsb.edu/tasexualharassment/) or contact the SHPE coordinator for in-person training. <carol.sauceda@sa.ucsb.edu>
